I will always be greatful for the advice given to me by the Palos Verdes, CA composer, Dr. Conrad Wedberg
when I approached him in the early 1980's to learn
classical composition from him:

"I can only teach you how compositions were written in the past.  
But I believe you are supposed to discover your own ways to compose,

and to create new styles of music."
 
I have been following his advice ever since.
